Illustration

A fire does not start as a fire. It starts with a spark. Hatred, cruelty, and carelessness with other people are sparks. The sixth commandment forbids not only the final act but everything along the path that leads there. Harsh words, bullying, and reckless anger all fall under this command.

Application

This commandment should humble us. We have all spoken cruelly or wished someone harm. Ask God to forgive you for the anger and unkindness in your heart, and thank him that Jesus bore the punishment for every sin, including this one.
