Catechisma

Q101. What do we pray for in the first request?

In the first request—"Hallowed be your name"—we pray that God would help us and others to honor him in everything by which he makes himself known, and that he would direct all things for his own glory.

Scripture Proofs — King James Version

1

Psalm 67:2–3

That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations. Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee.

2

That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.

For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Discussion Questions

  1. 1

What are we praying for when we say "Hallowed be your name"?

  2. 2

What does it mean to "hallow" or honor God’s name in everything?

  3. 3

How could you honor God’s name at school or on the playground?

Illustration

When you treat a library book carelessly, ripping pages and leaving it in the rain, you are not honoring the library. When you treat it with care, you show that it matters. God’s name is far more valuable than any book. To hallow his name means to treat him as the most important one in every part of life.

Application

Because God’s name deserves to be honored above all things, look for one way to honor him today that you would not normally think of. It might be how you talk about God in front of friends, or how you respond when things do not go your way. Ask God to help you make his name look good by your actions.
