Q68. What does Scripture teach about government?
Everyone should obey the government, because God is the one who puts leaders in place. Anyone who fights against the government is going against what God has set up. Give to the government what belongs to the government, and give to God what belongs to God.
Scripture Proofs — King James Version
Romans 13:1–2
Matthew 22:21
1 Peter 2:13–14
1 Timothy 2:1–2
“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”

Illustration
At school, you follow the rules your teacher sets, even if you did not pick that teacher. The Bible says God is the one who places leaders in authority. That does not mean every leader is good, but it means order and structure come from God. Respecting authority is one way you honor the God who stands behind it.
Application
Pray for a government leader by name this week. Ask God to give them wisdom and to protect the people they serve. Because God places leaders in authority, praying for them is praying according to his design.
