Q96. What is the Lord’s Supper?

The Lord’s Supper is a sacrament in which bread and wine are given and received as Christ commanded, showing his death. Those who receive it worthily share, not in a physical way but by faith, in his body and blood, with all his blessings, for their spiritual nourishment and growth in grace.

Scripture Proofs — King James Version

1

1 Corinthians 11:23–26

For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

1 Corinthians 10:16

The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

Illustration

When your family eats dinner together, you are not just filling your stomach. You are being together, belonging to each other, sharing life around one table. The Lord’s Supper is a meal where God’s family gathers around Christ’s table. The bread and wine remind us of his broken body and shed blood, and by faith we receive his grace.

Application

Because Jesus gave the Lord’s Supper to nourish your faith, watch carefully the next time it is served at church. Even if you are not old enough to take it yet, pay attention to the words and the actions. Ask God to help you understand what Jesus did for you on the cross.
