Q87. What is repentance that leads to life?

Repentance that leads to life is a saving grace in which a sinner, truly seeing his sin and understanding God’s mercy in Christ, turns away from his sin with sorrow and hatred of it, and turns to God with a real desire and effort to obey him.

Scripture Proofs — King James Version

1

Acts 11:18

When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

2

Acts 2:37–38

Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

3

Joel 2:12

Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:

Jeremiah 3:22

Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.

4

Jeremiah 31:18–19

I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God. Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

Ezekiel 36:31

Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations.

2 Corinthians 7:11

For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

Isaiah 1:16–17

Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

  1. 1

What is repentance that leads to life?

  2. 2

What is the difference between feeling sorry you got caught and being sorry you sinned against God?

  3. 3

Can you think of a time you were sorry for the wrong reasons? What would real repentance have looked like?

Illustration

When you break your mom’s favorite mug, you might cry because you are afraid of getting in trouble. That is different from crying because you know it was her favorite and you are sorry you hurt her. Repentance means being grieved that you offended God, not just worried about the consequences.

Application

Because God gives repentance as a gift, you can ask him for it. The next time you sin, do not just say "sorry" and move on. Stop and think about how your sin grieves God. Then ask him to change your heart so you want to obey him.
