What three things does the catechism say Baptism gives?

  2. 2

How can water give forgiveness of sins, rescue from death, and eternal salvation?

  3. 3

Why does the catechism add "to all who believe"?

Illustration

A letter from the governor can pardon a prisoner and set them free. The paper and ink are ordinary, but the authority behind them changes a person's whole life. Baptism uses ordinary water, but God's Word and promise stand behind it. Through Baptism, God actually delivers forgiveness, rescues from death, and grants eternal life.

Application

If you have been baptized, this is what God has given you: forgiveness, rescue, and salvation. When you feel guilty about sin this week, remind yourself of your baptism. Say out loud, "I am baptized, and God has promised to forgive me."
