Lord’s Day 2

Q4. What does God's law tell us to do?

Christ teaches us in Matthew 22:37–40: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets."

Scripture Proofs — King James Version

1

Deuteronomy 6:5

And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

2

Leviticus 19:18

Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

Discussion Questions

  1. 1

What two things does God's law say we must do?

  2. 2

What do you think it looks like to love God with ALL your heart, soul, and mind?

  3. 3

Who is someone in your life you find hard to love as much as yourself?

Illustration

Think about the person you love most in your family. Even your love for that person falls short of what God requires. God says to love him with every single part of yourself and to love every person around you just as much as you care about yourself. That is a tall order for anyone.

Application

Pick one person at school or in your family who is hard to be kind to. This week, do one kind thing for that person. Ask God to help you love that person the way his law commands.
