Lord’s Day 34

Q92. What does the Lord say in his law?

God spoke all these words: "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Honor your father and your mother. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. You shall not covet."

Scripture Proofs — King James Version

Illustration

A parent who adopts a child might say: "I chose you and brought you home. Now here are our family rules." The rules are not what made the child part of the family. The parent's love did that. The rules show the child how to live well in the family. God rescued Israel first, then gave them his law.

Application

Read Exodus 20:1-17 aloud as a family this week. Before you start, remind each other: God gave these commands to people he had already saved. We obey as grateful children, not as slaves trying to earn freedom.
