Lord’s Day 28

Q76. What does it mean to eat Christ's body and drink his blood?

It means to believe with all your heart that Christ suffered and died for you, and so to receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life. It also means that through the Holy Spirit, who lives in both Christ and in us, we are joined more and more to Christ. Even though he is in heaven and we are on earth, we are flesh of his flesh and bone of his bone (meaning we truly belong to him). And we are always guided by one Spirit, just as the parts of a body are guided by one soul.

Illustration

A branch attached to a vine draws life from the vine even though the branch and the roots are in different places. The sap flows through the whole plant. By the Holy Spirit, we are connected to Christ in heaven. His life flows to us. We are joined to him as closely as a branch to its vine.

Application

This week, read John 15:1-5 as a family. Talk about what it means that Christ is the vine and we are the branches. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you trust that your connection to Christ is real, even though you cannot see it.
