Lord’s Day 6

Q17. Why must he also be true God?

So that by the power of his divine nature he could carry the weight of God's anger against sin in his human nature, and win back for us righteousness and life.

Discussion Questions

  1. 1

Why must our Savior also be true God?

  2. 2

What can the divine nature of Jesus do that a mere human could not?

  3. 3

How does knowing that God himself bore his own wrath comfort you?

Illustration

A paper cup cannot hold boiling water without melting. Only something much stronger can handle that kind of heat. God's anger against sin is so heavy that only someone with the power of God himself could bear it and survive. Jesus is that strong because he is God.

Application

When you feel like your sin is too big or too many, remember that your Savior is God himself. His power to save is bigger than your power to sin. Ask God to help you rest in that.
